Day 4 Arguments: 20th November

In the previous hearing, the Bench headed by Chief Justice Gogoi reviewed the Central Vigilance Commission's (CVC) submission. In its submission, the CVC reported on its investigation into corruption allegations raised against CBI Director Alok Verma. The Bench granted the CVC more time to complete its investigation. It also ordered Fali Nariman, counsel for Director Verma, to submit a response to the CVC's report by Monday, 19th November.

In today's brief hearing, CJI Gogoi expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that Fali Nariman's report had been released to the press prior to the hearing. Note that the Court's 16th November order did not specify that Nariman's report ought to be submitted in a "sealed cover".

Rather remarkably, Fali Nariman announced that he was shocked that counsel Gopal Shankaranarayanan had mentioned the case yesterday (19th November) on behalf of Mr. Alok Verma. G Shankaranarayanan is also a counsel for Director Verma. Nariman, who is lead counsel for Director Verma, stated that he had not authorised the mentioning. Note, a mentioning takes place when a counsel brings a case before the Court, even though the case is not formally listed on the day of the mentioning.

The matter has been adjourned to 29th November, 2018.
