Day 2 Arguments: 22 July 2019

The court is hearing a petition by the Gujarat High Court Advocates Association (GHCAA) against the Union government's 'deliberate inaction' in appointing Justice Kureshi as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. The GHCAA claims that the Union government has violated the memorandum of procedure governing appointments and Article 217 of the Constitution.

Today, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested two more weeks to file a response on behalf of the Union government. He submitted that he had not yet received directions from the Union.

The three judge bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Aniruddha Bose granted the Solicitor General's request. The case was listed for 2 August.
