Urgent Mentioning: 27 January 2020

The Supreme Court is resolving certain overarching questions pertaining to freedom of religion, arising out of the referral in the Sabarimala review judgment. In the previous hearing, the nine-judge Bench directed all counsels to meet on 17 January to re-frame the issues in the case.

Today, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Bench that the counsels had failed to reach a consensus. He urged the Bench to re-frame the issues and submitted a document containing suggestions.

Chief Justice Bobde said the Bench would consider the Solicitor General's request and signalled that a ten-day hearing period would be set for the case. He did not set a next date of hearing.
