Can the tragedy at Unnao shape POCSO implementation?

DESK BRIEF: On July 31st, Chief Justice Gogoi tagged the Unnao rape to the POCSO case.

We had reported on July 12th that the SC began regulating the trial of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Less than 4% of the over 25,000 child abuse cases registered in 2019 have been disposed of. The Court appointed Senior Advocate V Giri to collect macro-level data and recommend nationwide guidelines.

The tragic turn of events in Unnao where the child victim of rape and her lawyer were gravely injured in a suspicious car accident has dramatically shifted the Court’s attention. On July 31st, Chief Justice Gogoi tagged the Unnao rape to the POCSO case.

Can the tragedy at Unnao spur the radical overhaul of POCSO trials across India? Track further developments here.

Sincerely,

SC Observer Desk
