Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a list of all Indian citizens residing in Assam. Residents whose names are excluded from the NRC are considered illegal immigrants. During former CJI Ranjan Gogoi’s tenure, the State finally published the final list on August 31st 2019 – it excludes 19 lakh residents.

Now that the list has been published, it is unclear whether the Court will continue to monitor the NRC exercise. Today, the matter is listed before CJI SA Bobde,  Sanjiv Khanna and Surya Kant JJ.
