Day 10 Arguments

Elevation of Justice Kureshi

November 4th 2019

In line with the trend of the last few hearings in the case, the Bench adjourned the matter to November 8th (Friday). The adjournment came after the Solicitor General, Tushar Mehta, sought time till November 11th for the completion of some “administrative work”. He did not clarify what the administrative work was exactly and merely sought time till the said date. Although the Bench was initially reluctant to grant an adjournment, it eventually acceded to the request and posted the matter to November 8th.

In a rather interesting development, one Swami Omji sought to implead himself in the matter as an intervenor. Appearing in person, Swami Omji argued that the petitioner – Gujarat High Court Advocates Association – did not have the locus standi to file the petition. He further submitted that only the President of India and the Supreme Court Collegium are proper parties to the petition.

The Bench though was uninterested in entertaining the intervention application and rejected it forthwith.
