Day 6 Arguments

Elevation of Justice Kureshi

September 5th 2019

On May 10th, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended appointing Justice Akil Kureshi as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Union Law Ministry did not respond and on June 10th appointed Justice SK Jha as the ‘Acting Chief Justice’. A month later, the Gujarat High Court Advocates Association (GHCAA) filed a PIL praying for the immediate appointment of Chief Justice Akil Kureshi. The matter was repeatedly adjourned upon the request of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. Finally, on August 28th, the CJI stated that he had received a letter from the Union Law Ministry.

Today, the CJI stated that the Collegium would meet at 1:45 PM to discuss the letter. The matter has been adjourned to next week.
