Urgent Mentioning

Constitutionality of Muslim Marriage Laws

December 2nd 2019

The Supreme Court is hearing several PILs challenging the constitutionality of polygamy, Nikah Halala and other Muslim marriage law matters. On March 26th 2018, the Court issued notice to the Union of India and referred the matter to a Constitution Bench.

Today one of the petitioners, BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, mentioned the matter before the Chief Justice Bench. He unsuccessfully requested the Bench to urgently list the matter. The matter has been listed for after the winter vacation.
