The Supreme Court Collegium now consists of three future Chief Justices
With Justice J.K. Maheshwari’s retirement from the Supreme Court on 28 June, the Collegium headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant will now include Justices Vikram Nath, B.V. Nagarathna, M.M. Sundresh and P.S. Narasimha. Justice Maheshwari was the third senior most judge at the time of his retirement and had been part of the Collegium since May 2025. Justice Narasimha is the fifth senior most judge of the Supreme Court.
The current Collegium
CJI Surya Kant joined the Collegium on 5 July 2023 and has been involved in the appointment of 21 Supreme Court judges, five of which were made in June during his tenure as CJI. He will be a part of the Collegium until his retirement in February 2027.
Justice Nath is the senior most puisne judge of the Supreme Court. He joined the CJI Sanjiv Khanna-led Collegium in January 2025 and will lead the Collegium as CJI from February to September 2027. He has been involved in the appointment of 11 Supreme Court judges.
Justice Nagarathna joined the Collegium after the retirement of Justice A.S. Oka in May 2025. Like Justice Maheshwari, she too has been involved in the appointment of 10 Supreme Court judges.
Justice Sundresh joined the Collegium following the retirement of CJI B.R. Gavai. He has been involved in five Supreme Court appointments and will serve until his retirement in July 2027.
The most recent addition to the Collegium is Justice Narasimha. He will lead the Collegium as CJI from October 2027 to May 2028.
Highlights of the Collegium
The current composition includes three future Chief Justices: Justices Nath, Nagarathna and Narasimha. Notably, Justice Narasimha was appointed directly from the Supreme Court Bar. The last time the Collegium included a judge elevated from the Bar was in July 2020 with the inclusion of former CJI U.U. Lalit.
As of today, there are three vacancies in the top court with a fourth set to open up as Justice S.C. Sharma is due to retire in November 2026.
